My latest concerted efforts in travelling sketchbooks activity have occured on our stays in Rothbury, Northumberland, and the wonderful Blythburgh over New year 24/25. The former has such wonderful old Victorian aura and has a market town feel. Nice and handy for the beaches of Alnmourth and Embleton, it offered some decent sketch fodder.
Blytheburgh had such a distinctive but unfamiliar feel, with the glowing golden reedbeds and waterways which offered refuge for whole gatherings of Avocet and the odd solitary Egret. Wonderful crisp sunrises. Cold hands, but worth the sketching toils. It is taking me a while to respond in my usual expressive manner to the flat reedbeds, but enjoying the fresh challenge.
