Paul Hillary Fine artist

Paul Hillary is a British abstract and semi-abstract artist influenced by atmospheres in nature aswell as everyday textures in the urban and countryside environments. Working in largely oil and acrylic, Paul is constantly exploring with technique, colourways and texture in his art.

Influences and Inspirations

The Lake District, with its grandiose and often stark landscapes, has always been my muse. The interplay of light and shadow across the fells, the subtle hues of dawn and dusk, and the restless energy of the sea have profoundly shaped my artistic vision. These elements come together in my work to evoke a sense of place that is both familiar and transcendent.

My art seeks to capture the essence of these landscapes, distilling them into semi-abstract forms that evoke the spirit rather than the literal representation of the scene. The United Kingdom's rugged beauty and the dynamic power of the sea are ever-present in my creations, guiding my brush and shaping my palette.

Artistic Process

In my studio, I immerse myself in the memories and emotions stirred by my explorations of the natural world. I begin each piece with a series of quick sketches and colour studies, allowing the initial impressions to flow freely. From there, I build layer upon layer, using both bold strokes and delicate washes to create depth and movement within the composition.

Texture plays a crucial role in my work, mirroring the tactile quality of the landscapes that inspire me. I often incorporate mixed media, using materials such as sand, gesso, and collage to add dimensionality and a tactile element that invites the viewer to engage with the work on a sensory level.

Exploration of Themes

Central to my art is the exploration of the relationship between land and sea, and the liminal spaces where they meet. These boundaries are not rigid, but fluid and ever-changing, much like the creative process itself. I am fascinated by the way the elements interact - how the sea carves into the land, how the mist obscures and reveals, and how the light transforms the landscape throughout the day.

My work often reflects the tension and harmony between these forces, capturing moments of tranquility and turbulence. Through semi-abstraction, I strive to convey the emotional resonance of these scenes, allowing the viewer to find their own connections and interpretations within the work.

Connection to the Viewer

Art, to me, is a dialogue. It is a conversation between the artist, the subject, and the viewer. Each piece I create is an invitation for the viewer to step into the landscape, to feel the wind on their face, the salt in the air, and the solidity of the earth beneath their feet. I want my work to evoke a sense of place that is both personal and universal, inviting reflection and a deeper appreciation of the natural world.
